Compact Eclipse on Ubuntu

by drphrozen

Ever thought that Eclipse on Ubuntu was a bit big (visually), this shows how i got mine to a more compact/minimal look.

Before

After

The solutions was to use a custom GTK themeĀ and setting this using an applications specific GTK setting [ref].

To sum up:

Install one of these themes (by manually unpacking to ~/.themes/ or by dragging the link to Appearance Preferences)

Then add the GTK2_RC_FILES entry to the /usr/bin/eclipse script:

#!/bin/sh

export GTK2_RC_FILES="$HOME/.themes/Clearlooks Compact/gtk-2.0/gtkrc"

# work around for e#290395 / LP: #458703
# https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=290395
# https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/458703
export GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=true
# Disable unity overlay if necessary
export LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=0
...

And voila.. A slim version of eclipse, enjoy!

On a side note, this will also fix unreadable black popups when hovering stuff in eclipse.
